It’s also impossible to describe the magic in words – it’s like explaining a joke, you just can’t do it if you still want people to laugh. Why? Because I can’t describe any of it without sucking away some of the crucial surprise value, and if I do anyway I’ll probably be committed because it all sounds so insane. Their latest is Botanicula, and it’s simultaneously a wondrous game for players and a reviewer’s nightmare. What do they have in common? They’re all made by Amanita Design, an indie developer focused on creating lovely adventure games with no dialogue at all. “Enjoyable”, “fun”, “challenging”, “satisfying” all perhaps, but how many games can produce actual wondrous, pleasant, smile-inducing joy? I can name three off the top of my head: Samorost, Machinarium, and Samorost 2. I believe there are hint guides online you can use that will point you in the right direction without giving it away for some of those more obscure puzzles.“Joyful” is not a word I’d use to describe many games. The first chapter has a couple bizarre puzzles but once you understand how the game wants you to think it’s a lot of fun, and the second chapter in particular is one of the best designed levels I’ve ever played. All the puzzles have clear solvable solutions without feeling like you were supposed to guess at something random, but they’ll also take a bit of thinking to work through.Īnd while it may be the poster child for obscure puzzles, I think Grim Fandango isn’t actually that rough and is good enough as a whole to warrant getting through the weird stuff. The puzzles are all about navigating the mansion and preventing the murders and I think the difficulty is pretty perfect for it. You rewind time every 12 hours to solve the murders of the guests. The Sexy Brutale is a new one I really enjoyed: the story takes place over the course of a single day at a masquerade party in a mansion. While still enjoyable, it's not a good entry point for the series. Be warned that the fifth, and final, entry in the series is somewhat of a departure from the previous four, focusing much more on action than adventure. My personal favorites are the second and fourth games, but they're all worth playing. The first game is still very playable to this day. There are 5 games in the series, which began in 1989 and ran for about 10 years. Unlike, say, King's Quest, the puzzles in Quest for Glory are not obtuse and, as before stated, have multiple solutions. Challenges can be conquered in many ways, with options that vary based on both your stats and skills or magic spells you've acquired during your journey. Your stats increase during play as you use them. Basically, you create a character, pick a class, and give yourself stat points. It's a genre mash-up of point-and-click adventure with action RPG.
